Gariep and the surrounding area is one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Like a jewel this peaceful town is perfect for a tranquil getaway with plenty of activities, minus the crowds.

Gariep Dam Wall
Arrange with the Department of Water Affairs for a tour through the dam wall

Gariep Nature Reserve
Approximately 100 km long and 24 km wide; 25 km long tourist roads.
Sailing, canoeing, fishing, power boating, water-skiing, and windsurfing are all very popular activities on Gariep Dam.

The first hydro-electric power station built by Escom

The Oviston Nature Reserve
Southern side of the Gariep Dam, close to town Venterstad, 16 000ha
